Another Basic Guide

Abbela's basic guide for the new players.

So I've Created My Character. Now What?!

You've gotten your first character! Let me be the first one to say...Congratulations! A mentor will have helped you go through the process to actually getting the settings set up to get you a character. But you'll notice as you look around, there's some other things that people have set, too. I'm sure you have some questions about them.
  • How do I get that message next to my name on the WHO list?
  • How do I set that title on the where list?
  • How do I get that message next to my name when I type 'look'?
  • How do I set that pinfo thing?
  • How do set my age in the 'ws'?
  • How do I get those nifty page messages that the mentors have?

Well, let me tell you. All of those questions are going to be answered for you if you take this tutorial. Just get started!

Just What Do You Think You're Doing? If you type who at all while you're on the MUCK, you'll get a list that looks something like this...

Player Name On For Idle Doing...
Abbela 00:01 35s Of course I'm insane!
Miria 00:14 13m CruelRPing the day away.
Joseph 00:15 9s Let me be the second to say Congratz!
Electra 00:20 1s www.casualforums.com/soapbox/mucklogs
Sharpear 00:26 8s Join Blahblahsoandso. Page me!
Sintanea 01:30 2m This is the song that doesn't eeeend!
Tsael 01:31 1s Trying to get WH to read WoT!
Ardilla 02:26 2s Yes. Snarfblat. Snarflblat indeed.
7 characters are connected. (Max was 70)
Now. Getting that spiffy doing message next to your name is really quite simple. All you have to do is do type the following:
@doing me=[Insert spiffy message here].
See? Nothing to it. Great way to spread propaganda about the squirrel take over of the world. Or whatever. ;)

What's Your Job Title?
If, at the same time you did the who thing, you typed where, you'd get the find list. Which would look something like this.

Player Title S Species Stat Idle Location
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abbela CuteAngle F Squirrel OOC 1m Abbela's Hollow Tree
Sintanea Patchwork F Rat OOC 54s Crevasse
Miria CruelRPer F Fox IC 22s Nimrev: Miria's Quarters
Electra Fish Tea! F Mouse OOC 0s What's *Your* Job Title?
Sharpear Healer F Fox IDL 3m Sharpear's Tent
Tsael ~ENGAGED~ M Fox IC 45s Room #301 (Tsael's Inn)
---------------------------------------------- 11:21:00 AM - 10/13/61--
Now, of course you want to know how to get that neat little title in front of your name. All you have to do is type the following:
+settitle [Your Title]
Easy as pie! Now you have another spiffy little thing set up. Want more? Continue on.

Just A Short Description, Please Walk into a room and you'll notice that quite a few of the characters have words before or after their name. Like this...
[IC] Bruised and broken ego, (Miria)
or
[OOC] Mentorini, Chile bean-y, (Abbela)
How do I get THAT set? Actually, you have TWO ways to do that one. Number one:
@sdesc me=[Your spiffy little phrase, don't forget to put your name in ()s]
and
+set sdesc=[That same spiffy little phrase, don't forget to put your name in ()s]
There you go! Another little thing down on the road to having everything all set up.

Of Course I Want Some (p)Info!
You may have noticed that when you type pinfo [A character], you get a list of pretty nifty information about that person. It looks like this.

----------------------------------------
Personal Info for Abbela
OOC : Out Of Character Information
----------------------------------------
RL Name: Erin
Nickname: Dilby
RL Gender: Female
E-mail address: abbela@members.limitless.org
Homepage address: http://members.limitless.org/~abbela
Marital Status: Ahem. See 'Birthdate'
Location: Missouri, for college. The second most boring state
behind IL, my home state.
Birthday: 10/22/80
School: CMSU (Go Mules!)
Job: Student
----------------------------------------
IC : In Character Information
----------------------------------------
IC Full Name: Abbela Hazelnut Arrabow
Gender: Female
Species: Squirrel
Profession: Archeress
Alignment: I fight for truth, justice, and the Mossflowerian way!
Hangout: Anywhere!
Group: CORIM
Height: I'm a squirrel. I'm shorter than a badger, but taller
than a mouse.
Weight: That's impolite!
Age: 9 seasons (about 18 years)
----------------------------------------

Wow. That's a lot of stuff! And you can get it set on yourself, too. Guess what? There's two ways to get this started, too!
pinfo #
and
+set pinfo
Once you type one of these, you'll be taken through the steps of setting each of those categories. If you want to fill in a category, type in what you want. If you'd rather leave that one blank, just type in a . and keep on going! And guess what! You're over halfway through with the tutorial! Keep on going!

Act Your Age!
When you type ws in a room, it'll give you a nice list of who's there, their species, and the character's age. Like this...

Stat Player Sex Species Age
----------------------------------------------------------
IC Electra Female Mouse 13 seasons
OOC Abbela Female Squirrel 9 seasons
----------------------------------------------------------

Now.. You set your name, sex and species when you created your char. But not your age. To do that, all you have to do is type:
+set age=[Your age]
However, remember, animals age faster than humans do, right? So we've set up a little system. One season=Two years. So if you want your char to be 20 years old humanwise, they're going to be 10 seasons old. If you want them to be a REALLY old 100 years old, they'd be 50 seasons. Got it? If you have any questions about that, just ask a mentor. Now go on with the tutorial!

Paging Dr. You!
You may have noticed that the mentor who created your character had some goofy page message like this...
You have a strange thought of Abbela's voice in your head. It says, "Hi! Would you like to have a character?" You can't think if it's a memory, or a vision of the future... (to you)
Well. YOU can set goofy page messages like that, too! Isn't that spiffy?! There are two versions. One for regular pages. One for page-poses. To set the regular page one, you do this.
+set opage=The message you want around your page. Where you want the REAL message to show up, you put "%m". That will subsitute your message.
To set your page-pose message, you do the following:
+set opage-pose=The message you want around your page-pose. Put in %m where you want your real action.
There are other substitutions you can make in your page messages, too. Here's a complete list:
%m= Your message. DO NOT forget to put THAT one in!
%t= The name of the people who are GETTING the page.
%n= Your name!
%w= The current time.
%l= The location that you're at right now.
Of course, you don't have to set ALL of those. Just the %m is the important one. Oh, and you HAVE to have your name in your page messages, so that the people you're paging to know where it's from. If you don't put it in, well, it'll just stick it at the front. And that can look icky. Go on now.

The END!
Hurrah! You've hit the end of this walkthrough of spiffy little settings you can put on yourself. If you have any questions on any of these, you can always ask a member of the helpstaff. Type @help <message> to send your message to the helpstaff. Have fun! And the great part about these is that you can change them any time you want! Just go through the same steps again.
