Redwall Frequently Asked Questions
General
Q: What's this room paging thing? Why are people telling me to use it?
A: Room paging is a means of saying something that isn't part of the roleplay, while at the same time letting everyone else know that your comments are OOC and not being said by your character. Room pages don't show up on the radio too, which helps cut down on the amount that is broadcast. You want to use room pages when you have something short to say that isn't being said by your character, such as "I have to leave" or "I'm going away from my keyboard for five minutes". Please don't hold long conversations in room page if there is a roleplay occuring in your room! It is disruptive, and people will ask you to take it to pages.
You room page by typing RP (without the quotes) in front of your message. You can room page-pose by typing RP : (without the quotes) in front of your message. Example: 'rp I'm going afk' and rp : is going afk.
Q: What's OOC and IC? People keep talking about it, and I don't know what in the world it means!
A: OOC stands for Out of Character. OOC is anything that does not have to do with your character or the events going on in the game. For instance, OOC would be how you yourself are feeling, thinking, or things that you know that your character couldn't possibly, such as roleplaying that is going on in an entirely different part of the MUCK world, or the basketball game on t.v. or the storm raging outside your house. OOC is also when you have your character act in ways that he wouldn't without information that he has no way of getting. For instance, if someone has annoyed you, and your characters act angry and annoyed at their characters when they have no reason to.
IC stands for In Character. It means the exact opposite of OOC. IC is anything that your character is thinking, feeling, or doing. It includes any and all experiences they have had in roleplays, their past, their personality, and so on. This can be vastly different from how the player may think and feel, or what they may know.
Q: Hey! That weasel was just really rude to my character, and I didn't do anything to him! Why did that happen?
A: It's important to remember that not all characters on Redwall MUCK are nice! This doesn't mean that their players are mean and rude, or that they don't like you as a player, it just means their character decided to pick on your character.
Q: Whoa, wait a minute. A character just wished mine a good day and was really polite, and he's a fox! Aren't foxes supposed to be evil?
A: In the novels, foxes and other vermin were almost exclusively evil, conniving, greedy liars. However, on the MUCK, because it is not Brian Jacques who is controlling the characters but dozens and dozens of different players, you're likely to come across a lot of characters that don't follow the standard good and evil rules. You'll find nasty mice, polite vixens, and murdering squirrels. The reason for this is that species alignment is not enforced, so as to give players more opportunities to develop their characters. So if you want to play a repentant ferret, feel free! But if you want to play a prejudiced mouse who hates all vermin, you are also more than welcome to!
Q: Gosh you have a ton of acronyms for things. What do they all mean?
A: Here's a few more commonly used ones for a reference:
IC: In Character OOC: Out of Character AFK: Away from Keyboard IDL: Idle DYN: Dynamic Roleplay. Minor twinks, such as pushes, touches, handshakes, and so on are allowed without asking permission. LOL: Laughs Out Loud.
Q: What does twink mean?
A: A twink is when someone does something to another's character without their permission. This can be as simple as shaking their hand, to stabbing them, to doing something that would force their character to act in ways that it wouldn't be IC for them to do.
Redwall
Q: Hey, what's wrong with this place? Your room descriptions have broken windows, fallen bell towers, and shattered walls! What happened?
A: Roughly two years ago, there was a huge earthquake that rocked Mossflower Country. Redwall Abbey suffered a great deal of damage in the earthquake, and was temporarily overrun by looters and a monitor horde. When the cold and disease ran out the horde, the Redwall beasts returned and began the long, slow rebuilding process.
Q: Okay, if it's been two years, how come things are still a mess?
A: It takes a very long time to build things like the Abbey walls, even under the best of conditions. And the Redwallers have been beset by storms, fear of starvation, disease, bandit attacks, horde threats, and even a mysterious murderer.
Q: Can my character help build Redwall?
A: Of course! There are all sorts of things your character can do to help, depending on what sort of skills they have. Even if they are unskilled, there is plenty of rock hauling and general cleaning they can do. Come in and ask around.
Q: Where's the Abbot?
A: Redwall hasn't had an Abbot or Abbess for years, ever since Abbot Brocmal died. During the earthquake, and the aftermath, most of the order members were killed off, resulting in Redwall's order being almost completely gone. That means there is also no Badger Mother or Champion.
Q: Ack!
A: I know!
Q: So who do I talk to? Is there anyone in charge of things at all?
A: Right now, your best bet is to talk to Kevarr, Redwall's former Bellringer, Nagia, a former sea adventuring squirrel, or Sunrose, a former Redwall instructor. These three are working in tandem to try and get things back on their paws, so to speak, and can usually help you out with whatever you need.
Q: What if I want something done on the Redwall part of the website?
A: All you have to do is talk to me (Kevarr) on the MUCK, or leave me a page-mail if I'm not online. If you really need to contact me and for some reason the MUCK won't work, you can email me.
Q: Okay, what about Martin's sword? If there's no Champion, where is it?
A: That's a mystery! Shortly after the earthquake, the last Champion, Atanis, died in a fire. For a while the Redwall beasts thought that they had the sword, but then it was discovered that the sword was a fake! So no one knows what happened to it, though no doubt it will resurface someday when a worthy beast appears to take up the mantle of Champion.
Q: Whoa, there's a lot of hares in the Abbey. What are they doing here?
A: Near the very end of winter, Kevarr and her family travelled to Salamandastron in order to solicit the help of the Long Patrol. Accordingly, the Long Patrol sent a large force back with them, and they are now serving as Redwall's defenders.
Q: That's neat. Hey! What if I want to be part of the Long Patrol or work with them?
A: You should go looking for Colonel Zoe_Lang. She can answer any and all questions you might have about the Long Patrol. You can also look at their group page here on the website.
Q: What if I have other questions or suggestions? What if I want to add something to this list?
A: You can talk to me on the MUCK, through page-mail, email, or you can post on our discussion boards.
