There's actually a discussion going on about that very matter in the Chatterbox.
* Abbot/Abbess- Aye, we need one. We won't get one until someone is showing themselves to be Abbot/Abbess material, in which case most characters (and players!) in the Abbey will recognize this, and Otter will grant it official status. The same goes for Champion. In the meantime, it is being run as close to the books as possible giving these limitations, and the much greater range of possibilities.
* Vermin- In the books, Redwall was primarily a woodlander home. This is not because vermin were not allowed, it's because most vermin in the books (who, mind, all had to fill the role of antagonist and villain), had no desire to live in Redwall Abbey (a conquered and renamed Redwall Abbey is another matter). There were also cases in the books in which vermin *did* live in Redwall, usually only for a brief period because they would either kill or attempt to kill the other residents.
Now...why are there a significant number of vermin in Redwall on the MU? Because there are many, many different people playing, as opposed to only one author, and as a result, these characters are not all of the 'thug' variety to be found in the books. Redwall has no IC basis for throwing out beasts that know how to (usually) behave themselves, and therefore the vermin that *do* behave themselves have a place in Redwall just like any other beast.
Redwall's rules and principles do not change based on species. You're more than welcome to make a character who makes that distinction, however!
