Novice Advancement

General Advancement: To fullfill their requirements, unless stated otherwise, a novice has only to see an elder and pass to their satisfaction. For first level novices, they must see the Recorder once they have finished their requirements in order to advance to second level. For second level novices, they must see the Abbot or Abbess. For each requirement that has been successfully passed, the novice will get a leaf shaped bead. Each requirement has its own color bead. To avoid cheating, this bead *must* be created by Abbeybuilder. When a novice advances, from first level to second level, and again from second level to member, these bead objects will be turned back in, and they will recieve a single object in return which represents the beads being strung together. Again, this object needs to be created by Abbeybuilder.

First Level Novice: Pre-requisites

  • Has expressed a desire and willingness to devote their lives to the principles of Redwall Abbey.
  • Has been judged by an order member to be sincere in these desires.
  • Must be at least six seasons old.

Duties:

ICly, this is what your character is going to be experiencing during their time as a first level novice. You are not required to RP any of this if you do not like, but you should always bear in mind that these are the sorts of activities your character has been engaging in. Bemoaning chores or falling asleep in class because you stayed out after hours are all good methods of getting RP started!

  • Must rise every morning at six a.m. Those who sleep in get extra chores (hurray).
  • Must aid regular order members in chores between classes.
  • Study, study, study!
  • Must assist at least once a week with kitchen duties - cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes.
  • Must assist at least once a week with infirmary duties - At this level you'll be cleaning floors and cots and washing dirty linens, for the most part.
  • Must attend classes. If you skip classes you're likely to get more chores! Likewise if you're late to them.
  • There will be periods of free time for study and relaxation.

Advancement to Second Level Novice requirements:

green leaf Has learned the Charter of Redwall Abbey and can recite it by memory.

dark green leaf Can explain the meaning behind each different section of the charter, in detail, to the satisfaction of a testing Elder.

yellow leaf Has learned very basic arithmetic. (addition and subtraction)

red leaf Has learned the basics of reading and writing.

brown-red leaf Has demonstrated a good work ethic (chores!)

white leaf Has completed a simple task set out by an elder to the satisfaction of that same elder. This task should try to utilize the skills and values that the novice has been learning. This task can, but does not necessarily need to, involve more than one novice. Each novice who participates to the satisfaction of the task setting elder in said task completes the requirement.

acorn Upon advancement to Second Level Novice, an acorn bead is given to represent the novices growth.

Second Level Novice: Prerequisites

  • Must have completed all requirements for first level novices to advance.
  • Must be at least seven seasons of age.

Duties:

Again, ICly, this is what your character is going to be experiencing during their time as a second level novice. You are not required to RP any of this if you do not like, but you should always bear in mind that these are the sorts of activities your character has been engaging in. Bemoaning chores or falling asleep in class because you stayed out after hours are all good methods of getting RP started!

  • Must rise every morning at five-thirty a.m. Those who sleep in get extra chores (hurray). Second level novices set the table for breakfast, douse the night candles, light the ovens under supervision, and are responsible for waking first level novices. (cold water, anyone?)
  • Must aid regular order members in chores between classes, as well as first level novices. You get extra brownie points for tutoring.
  • Study, study, study! Classes are much more intensive than first level.
  • Must assist at least once a week with kitchen duties - cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes, and assist any first level novices involved. You may be asked to take on the planning of a meal yourself.
  • Must assist at least once a week with infirmary duties - At this level you'll be learning basic first aid, herb types and uses, and triage. All order members should know this.
  • Must attend classes. If you skip classes you're likely to get more chores! Likewise if you're late to them.
  • There will be periods of free time for study and relaxation. However, there is less free time than as a first level novice.
  • At this level you can specialize. In order to do so, you must go to the elder in charge of the field you are interested in and request to be taken on as an apprentice. Elders are not allowed to turn away sincere students, but a second level novice is only allowed to specialize in one field. If they decide they want to do something different, then they must start over again with their specialization duties with their new tutor. Specialization is not required.

Advancement to full membership general requirements:

green leaf Has learned the very basics of healing. This is general first aid type knowledge.

dark green leaf Has learned the basics of herblore.

yellow leaf Has learned advanced reading and writing. They should be able to write fluidly and without hesitation, and they should be able to read without difficulty or stumbling.

white leaf Has learned the following principles and values of Redwall life: charity, honesty, compassion, hard work, knowledge, loyalty, peace, honor, and courage. This is a BIG part of what second level will be learning, and is akin to the first level task set out by an elder. Each principle must not only be learned, but the student must demonstrate that they understand it. Therefore, for each principle, a task must be set by an elder. These should not be impossibly huge tasks, but they should be difficult, and if possible tailored to the novice or novices who are given the tasks. Once a task has been given, a novice cannot request a different task from a different elder for the same principle. Small, round glass beads will be given for each task performed, and when all tasks have been completed to the satisfaction of the elders, the round beads will be exchanged for the usual leaf shaped bead.

Tree Upon advancement to full brother or sister, a tree bead is given, once again to represent the novices growth and transformation from novice to full membership.

Advancement to full membership brewing requirements:

  • Set by the Cellar Keeper.

Any novice wishing to apprentice in these areas can gain permission from the teacher, who will then set the requirements. Final approval as always will go through the Abbot or Abbess.
