Getting Started

Getting into the MUCK the first time.

What's a MUCK?

A MUCK is a multi-user interactive virtual reality world. OK, that's too complex. A MUCK is a place you make a character on and pretend to be in a different place.

To get involved, you need to connect to the computer system and create a character. Since this is Redwall-based, you can only create characters that would make sense in Brian Jacques' books. Thus, you can't be a human or a vulcan, but you can be a mouse, otter, or rat.

Before you connect, decide what gender you wish your character to be. Gender, once chosen, can't be changed. There is absolutely no requirement that your in-game character be your gender. Brian Jacques is a man, and he had Mariel be a hero that was a female mouse. Just choose the gender for the character you would love to read about in the books.

You can connect with telnet, which works, but is the least friendly program you can use for the MU. The clients page lists places where you can download programs that are designed to work with MUCK/MUD/MUSH/MOO/MUSE such as Redwall MUCK, and that's the easiest way. The connection styles are all similar, so I'll describe telnet. The program you download will have something similar.

It's a good idea to read through the documents here on the web-site to get an idea of what goes on before you connect.

Connecting

Click here to open a direct telnet connection to the MUCK.

To telnet to the MUCK yourself, run your telnet client with the following command-line:

    telnet redwall.muck.limitless.org 4203

From Windows/Win95/WinXP/etc., go to the Start menu, pick "run" and then enter the same command:

    telnet redwall.muck.limitless.org 4203

A window will start which shows the name Redwall MUCK in large character-formed letters, and then waits for you to type. There's no prompt.

If you chose to make a female character, enter "connect female guest" and hit enter. If a male, "connect male guest" and hit enter.

And you are in!

Now what?

At this point, you should follow the instructions in the client program. It directs you to read various in-game articles, and to use commands to setup your character's name, age, and so on.

Read through this website (especially, the Help Topics folder in the navigation box to the left is a good place to start). The Frequently Asked Questions is an excellent place to read also.

And don't forget that if you want to join in the web-based message discussions as well, you need to join the web-site via the join box on the left.

Don't hesitate to ask for help in the game using @help or paging people you see. It takes time to learn your way around, the world is huge (more than 22,000 places in the world to visit!) and the system is text-based, so your imagination is the key to seeing everything.

And Lastly...

You are supposed to be here to have fun! So please, do so!
