i think a forum or gruop page where regulars may post question directly to a staffer/wizz or to all staffers/wizzes would be nice for newbies like me

There is a place created for pretty much what you suggested: the Frequently Asked Questions page in the Help section. It has its own discussion forum so that players and staffers alike can answer common questions and share vital information. It has been rather spammy, so I've just archived it, and I've linked it to the main discussion page so that it's easily accessible.
