Sorry to say it, but I think hordes *are* boring. I mean, what are you going to do? RP marching for days? Smaller groups mean that each character has a place, a part to play. With a horde, you've got the leader, maybe a few high-ups, and then *the horde*. The horde is one being, no roles to play. (No pun intended.)
I don't know if you've read 'Redwall' (you should if you haven't) but Cluny's horde is just that. Cluny's horde. You've got Cluny, and then the horde. There's a few names, but like I said, they're the captains.
So you've either got a group of all captains/generals, or a group of characters that do nothing.
Wow that came out more like a rant than I intended. Sorry!

I read Redwall actually. And I think a horde with species not played often, could give the species more appeal and I think a horde wouldn't have to be boring, if it has a good leader for it and everyone feels like a wanted part of the group.

How about a horde of zombies?

Everyone wants to be a general; some few are willing to settle for captain. Why not let everyone be captains, but make them responsible for controlling a few zombies?
The horde would then be five or six players, and perhaps 20 zombies. THAT is "big enough" to be spammy and intimidating, but small enough to use +ride to make workable.
Of course, good RPers won't bring up their zombie hordes to "overwhelm" this horde. Or make the "Twenty badgers in armor" zombie. Instead, the woodies ought to RUN.
What good is a horde if it's simply overwhelmed everywhere immediately by everyone?
