I pondered having it be a any vermin species but perhaps I was thinking of just lizardlike ones-Newts, Monitors, Lizards, Frogs, Toads. They'd be barbaric for the most part, with primitive weaponry (any age can join) and all evil. And probably cannibalistic, seerish perhaps too and superstitious...
