This is not fanfiction

I think, of all the things that bother me about these particular complaints, most of all is the insistence, sometimes inferred, sometimes openly stated, that Redwall roleplay needs to be regulated in some way, so as to lessen the angst/dramatics/fights/cheerfulness/whathaveyou.

Let me state it right here at the beginning. I will not make OOC rules to regulate IC behavior. We have IC rules for that. If someone breaks those IC rules, they are ICly punished, up to and including being kicked out of the Abbey. I will not agree to start booting players simply because they are too -insert your complaint here- for another player's tastes.

Furthermore, while the biggest reason for these 'necessary' regulations seems to be that it drives away newbies, I have yet to receive /any/ complaints from /any/ new player stating that Redwall has too much of -insert this here- for them to enjoy playing here. If any newbies out there do have complaints, I am more than willing to listen to them, and try to address them in whatever way I can -- but again, I will not make OOC rules to regulate IC behavior. The only exceptions to this are the rules of the MU, mostly pertaining to the rating.

Why am I so vehement abou this? Because I am of the very firm belief that the more OOC rules and regulations you introduce into a roleplay environment, the more limiting the RP possible is, and thus the less RP overall that you have. I am /quite/ certain that even those that would claim otherwise would not enjoy roleplaying at a cheerful, blissful Redwall in which nothing ever bad happens and no one ever disagrees. There are reasons as to why the books don't take place during the uneventful seasons.

Does this mean Redwall will be, overall, more angst filled, more dramatic, and with more violent episodes than the book Redwall ever would be? Yes, it does. Such is the nature of an online roleplaying environment. We have many, many writers, rather than just one.

Do I think that the angst, drama, and fighting in Redwall is at over the top levels? Yes, I do. To a point. This has, however, been present since at least the time I started playing on the game, roughly four years ago. I expect it will be present until the game is finally shut down for good.

I would ask that people please remember that they are completely free to roleplay what they enjoy roleplaying, within the rules of the rating and the genre, but that other people are /also/ free to roleplay what they enjoy roleplaying, again within the rating and the genre. If we begin to put limits on that, if we begin to tie people down because of what /other/ people do or do not enjoy, then eventually we will be so bogged down with rules and regulations that no one will be able to enjoy RPing in the Abbey, and it will become a ghost town.

This game is collaborative. Conflict of interest is inherent. For those who wish to be able to detail exactly what other characters do or do not do, there is always fanfiction, in which you control the entirety of events without having to interact with other people.
