Tutorials Weakness / User Manual

So, ha, I'm a little behind and all that, but! I just read the +MOTD for the first time in quite a while, and stumbled upon the article written up on the MUCK. I was thinking it might be a noble idea to attempt to at least start compiling information for a user manual - or at least a more comprehensive tutorial.

Thus, I'm opening the question to all of you. If there's a command or a program or a concept that you think should rightly be in a MUCK manual, comment here, either with just the name of the item, or preferably a write-up of the item, itself. Please, be sure to check the comments here before doing a write-up, so that "room-page" is not done ten times. Two or three times will allow for a combination of the three and thus a more comprehensive write-up, but ten is simply repetitive.

Thanks for any contributions to the effort!

Some examples of topics that should be covered:

Concepts: MUCK, MUCK vs. MUD, G-rating, IC, OOC, Weaponry, IC Positions/Ranks, Canon Areas, Non-Canon but established areas, Good vs. Bac on-MUCK vs. in the series, Dibbuns, Character creation (+set, help staff, etc.), staff, etc.

Commands/Programs: Page, Room-page, Say, Pose, Whisper, Pinfo, Lsedit, +set, +list_species, watchfor, look notification (l #notify me), Find/Where, Look perspective (l #horiz vs. l #vert), Find/Where,Who/3WHO, Title (+settitle), @doing, Time, +MOTD (checking, creation of, updating, editing, etc.), WS, etc.

I would love to see a real user manual

If there was a real "user's guide" to the MU itself, much of what is needed (like IC vs OOC) would be a separate document.

But even if the guide was interwoven, instead of in two sections, if the manual was useable by real end-users, the NMC 1.22 release would be easy for anyone to start their own MU on.

I like the idea

But it seems like a long-term goal. We should make several smaller tutorials and then compile them into a large manual when we've got it all done... atleast, it's a sound idea to me.

Could it be an interactive book?

I have a book that I created awhile ago. You could open the book, and it would display the contents page, with page numbers. The page numbers were actions that linked to specific pages. It would pretty much be an interactive tutorial without having to wander through a maze of rooms.

Just an idea. I'd welcome feedback.

For the staffers, please check out the staff discussion page for a link to a new staff page trying to collect information for this "manual" or whatever we choose to call it. I added a new page, but the ideas posted there are somewhat farfetched and not shaped into something we can use yet.
