Riddle Competition

The entire riddle competition from SUnday January 30th.

RW Abbey: Great Hall
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The Great Hall of Redwall Abbey. Countless paw falls have echoed from these stones, and untold numbers of feasts and merry gatherings have been held here.  A table, not nearly so grand or large as its predecessors, but quite functional for mealtimes, rests near the center of the hall. Chairs exist here aplenty, though most of them are obviously not from the same set. Many of the stained glass windows are broken, and have been patched with canvas and boards to fend against the elements. The floor is clean and swept. A fire is kept burning in the fireplace at almost all times of the day and night, and there are several more comfortable chairs and cushions set up here, of varying sizes. One looks large enough to easily accommodate a badger.

The Tapestry hangs proud and tall, and while the rest of Redwall may still bear the scars of natural disaster, this most famous of Redwall's relics remains unharmed by beast, time, or the elements. The figure of Martin the Warrior seems to be watching over his own with an unchanging, kindly gaze.

Red, blue, orange, green...vibrant patterns of color are painted on the floorstones of Great Hall by the high afternoon sun that is streaming through the stained glass windows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Furgo is standing up on one of the chairs, with a sheet of paper in his paws.
Rohen is near him, sitting in his new wheeled chair.
Quickbeak has been dozing for sometime up on one of the window ledges in the sun, one eye opening to look down at those below and he ruffles his feathers with a small chirp to wake himself up a bit, preening a few feathers back in place again before he watches for now, just out the way.
Asthore is standing by the stairs just staring around the room.
Stellaluna is as usual perching up on a wall upside down.
Furgo says, "Sister Sunrose has given me the permission to hold a riddle competition today. After a few riddles are solved, we will split into two groups, and from there each group will follow a riddle to a certain part of the abbey. There you will find another riddle leading to either a Turnip, Potato, and Beetroot Pie, or Salad with Candied Chestnuts in it."
Cela can be heard before she's seen, lumbering her way down to stairs she comes to a stop at the bottom, a nod going to Asthore since she's standing right by the stairs "Afta'noon lass" she says while passing on her way to the chairs, a slightly disgruntled look at Furgo for standing on the furniture but she doesn't say anything, does listen to what he's saying too.
Carrick stumbles in from the doorway to the kitchen and shakes his head. "That's it?" The novice looks disappointed. "Well, ye kids 'ave fun. Think I might go do somethin' else."
Asthore says, "afternoon."
Quickbeak stops preening and looks back down towards the mouse at the mention of Candied Chestnuts, he chirps a little before launching off his window sill and gliding down to land on the back of the chair Furgo's stood on "Where'a nuts?"
Furgo says, "Well, You'll just have to find that out by joining in, won't you? I'll make sure that when we split up to put you in the group that should find the salad that has candied chestnuts in it."
Asthore walks over near furgo " I kinda like riddles.. Im in"
Rohen is trying to wheel himself closer, but is struggling.
Tarpin squirms and shifts his weight from paw to paw. "Who's goin' first, mista Furgo?"
Furgo looks to Asthore, and smiles. He then says, "First there are other riddles to solve which I mad eup for fun. I'll rea doff a riddle, and when you have the answer, raise your paw or wing."
Stellaluna climbs down the wall closer to the other beasts, 'Sounds like it'll be fun."
Tarpin exclaims, "Then 'urry up, afore we all starve!"
Furgo says, "The first riddle is: In the cover of dark, it brings grey fur and death.
You say, "It turns swords red with rust, and wears mountains away. Bringing Change, and the seasons, and even new life. What am I>"
Carrick seats himself and takes off his hat as he lets out a mighty yawn. "I durno. Rain?"
Furgo shakes his head.
Rohen shouts out,
Tarpin raises a paw eagerly and waves it about.
Rohen shout sout, "Wind?"
Furgo shake shis head again, and says, "Tarpin?"
Quickbeak is rather confused by the whole concept of riddles anyway, head tilting to the sound of it.
Tarpin asks, "er, does et be water?"
Asthore raises her paw and looks quite confident.
Cela smirks slightly and folds her arms, not saying anything though, let the others guess it and have their fun.
Furgo says, "No Tarpin. Asthore?"
Asthore asks, "is it time?"
Furgo says, "Yes! It is time!" He crosses off something on his paper. "The next riddle is: Mighter than the sword,Friend of many, foe to few. Filling pages, making books, and wondrous to those who read. What am I?"
Tarpin stares up at the rafters, thoughtfully. "I were never a good reader. Wot's mighter then a sword that fills pages?"
Asthore sits down thinking.
Quickbeak looks very puzzled, doesn't have a cute what it all has to do with him getting nuts, still, he tries to think "Alla scribbleyscript whatta worms do?"
Furgo says, "Close, Quickbeak."
Rohen has an idea, and raises his paw.
Furgo says, "Rohen?"
Stellaluna asks, "Time?."
Carrick shrugs and leans back. "Knowledge?"
Furgo adds, "And that was the answer to the last riddle stellaluna. And no carrick.
Asthore says, "a recorder"
Stellaluna says, "Opps, forget to raise wing for answering question."
Rohen says, "One of dose tings youse always usin' ta wite?"
Furgo says, "Sorry, Asthore, but no." He then looks to Rohen, and says, "Yes! A pen!"
Tarpin stares at Rohen. Awe stamped on his features. "youm a very 'telligent beast."
Rohen says, "No, I just saw him using it to fill pages, an' he told Quickybeek it wasn't woids."
Furgo says, "The next riddle is one I got from one of the old records, but made a few chnages to: What is this: Ooch, dearie, owch, dearie, so good youch to see you ouch dearie, we should yow do this owch much more, dearie, ow, now for agh tea." He smiles.
Stellaluna asks, "Be nice to each other?."
Carrick says, "Hrm..." The mouse kicks his feet up onto the table. "S'it got anythin' ta do with Whiskey?""
Stellaluna raises wing belatly.
Quickbeak frowns, feathers puffing out cause he didn't get it "Sparra notta have'um quillfeathers" a brow raises and he gives Furgo a funny look at the next riddle.
Furgo says, "No Stellaluna and Carrick."
Tarpin sniggers. "Et sounds like uncle Spike an' aunt 'hilda comin' ta visit!"
Rohen just looks puzzled.
Furgo says, "Actually, Tarpin, you are very close. The answer isn't quite that."
Asthore says, "a hedgehog and a mouse hugging."
Stellaluna raises a wing, "go Visting friends?."
Furgo says, "On the right track, very close, you've got what they're doing right, Asthore."
Tarpin exclaims, "uncle Spike an' aunt 'hilda huggin' each other!"
Stellaluna raises a wing again, 'Go visiting with relatives?."
Furgo says, "I'm guessing that I'm going to have to accept your answer, Tarpin. It was actually Two Old Hedgehog Wives Hugging, but you are close enough, Tarpin."
Tarpin leaps up and down with a squeak. "I gotted one! do I gets a prize?"
Furgo says, "The prizes come after you'e been split up. Now, the next riddle is: Hard as a Mountain, Red Grey Black or Green, You find me all around you, and beneath your very feet. What Am I?"
Asthore raises her paw
Quickbeak gives a puzzles frown and looks down at his claws to what he's perched on "Chairseat?"
Tarpin looks down at his footpaws. "da floor?"
Stellaluna raises a wing, 'Rocks?>"
Furgo says, "No Quickbeak, and The floor is not all around you, Tarpin. Stellaluna, you are correct. The next riddle is: Whisping through the trees, whistling in the eaves, carving away at mountain and dune, knocking down the leaves. What am I?"
Asthore says, "wind"
Furgo says, "Yes, Asthore, correct. The next riddle is: My first is in map, but not in chart, My second in bog but not swamp. My third is in up but not in above, My fourth in stone but not rock. My last is in apple but not in fruit. One emm, one oh, one you, one ess, and one ee. What am I?"
Rohen thinks hard. Really hard.
Tarpin just stares hopelessly at Furgo.
Asthore leans back discombobulated at this riddle.
Asthore room-pages, "discombobulated means confused".
In a room page-pose, Stellaluna goes to turn off the PW for more troubleshotting later...*grumbles*
Cela taps the side of her muzzle lightly trying to work it out "Hmm, es et mouse?"
Stellaluna seems to be thinking.
Furgo says, "Yes, marm! What would be your name?"
Cela smirks a little and nods "Cela"
Tarpin asks, "mouse?! mouses aren't in maps or stone!"
Stellaluna asks, "Is mouse the answer?."
Furgo says, "Yes, mouse is the answer. It's a letter trick. See, there's an M in map, but not in chart, an O in bog but not swamp,  a U in Up but not above, an S in stone but not rock, and an E in apple but not fruit." he then looks at the list, and says, "Now it is time to split up into groups."
Asthore says, "finally"
Tarpin exclaims, "now we gets ta find tha food!"
Furgo says, "Asthore, Quickbeak, and I will be One Group, and Tarpin, Stellaluna, Rohen, and Cela will be the other group. If Rohen has trouble moving around, just give him a push."
Tarpin asks, "Where we goin'?"
Asthore stands up.
Furgo says, "The riddles will tell you. First Group, go over to the stairs. Second group, go to the door. Cela, here, this is the first riddle must solve."
Stellaluna flies over to the stairs and perches on a lower wall.
Quickbeak flutters down off the back of his chair and goes over to the stairs as instructed.
Asthore is at the stairs waiting.
Stellaluna seems to have misundderstood and quickly flies over to the door.
Rohen rolls himself over to the door in the wheeled chair.
Furgo makes his way over to the stairs.
Tarpin dashes for the doors eagerly. "I'm goin' ta eat it all an' not let you beasts have any, heehee!"
Rohen says, "Dat's not nice."
Cela waits over by the door for her little group to gather "Ye'll be sharin' an' we gots teh find et first" watching Tarpin dashing about.

RW Abbey: Staircase
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A flight of stairs that curve counterclockwise up through the abbey. The walls close in around the stairs tightly, ensuring that no dibbuns will go toppling off the stairs. Each level of the staircase has a stone platform that leads off into the different floors. The advent of an earthquake has not made these old stairs more stable, though the upheaval of the earth does not seem to have rendered them useless; it would be wise for all beasts to heed the squeeks and creaks of the staircase now.

Furgo says, "Now, out first riddle is: You lie on me, You rest, You dream. You tuck your young ones, into me. I am in this very abbey, with many, many twins. Where am I?"
Asthore says, "so..."
Asthore says, "a bed"
Furgo says, "And where will we find a bed?"
Asthore says, "the dormitories"
Furgo says, "Good! Let's go there."
Quickbeak just tilts his head at the answer and looks a little confused, he seems to be doing that a lot today.
RW Abbey: Lower Dormitory
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This place is dark and cool, even on the hottest of days. The floorstones are neatly swept, despite the minor cracks and seams that show there. The walls likewise seem cracked, as if a great deal of stress was once applied to them. There are a great number of hallways leading away from here to different dormitories. One of them seems to have suffered a great deal of damage. There are stairs at either end of this room, one spiraling up into the Abbey, and the other leading a short ways to two brass lined doors that open out into the open grounds.

Furgo walks down, and picks up a new sheet of paper. He reads it over in his head as he waits for the others to follow.
Asthore follows in after furgo " I could tell when we first met that you liked me."
Quickbeak hops along behind them looking at the new sheet when it's found.
Again, if a mouse could blush, Furgo would be doing so. "The next riddle says: A prison in these walls, while things in me live free. You often look and rest by me. Small tasty treasures, Big scrumptious treats, all these I hold, just guess: what is me?"
Asthore says, "i have no clue."
Quickbeak goes rather quiet thinking for a while "Alla food stuffs be'um inna kitchenplace"
Furgo says, "Are there things that live there whole lives in a kitchen, Quickbeak? And the kitchen isn't much of a prison."
Asthore says, "the cellars"
Furgo shakes his head. "Well, I don't know, but I don't often rest by the cellars."
Quickbeak shrugs his wings "Wouldum livea inna kitchenplace iffa wormcooks stop chaseum out..." back to thinking again...
Asthore says, "the orchard"
Asthore says, "never mind that answer... a classroom"
Furgo almost looks like he is going to wince, but doesn't.
Furgo says, "And no, neithe rof those are right."
Asthore says, "i give on this part * starts thinking/*"
Quickbeak frowns slightly in concentration before he looks back to the others "Wherea worms likeum rest?"
Asthore says, "worms like to rest in the ground."
Furgo says, "I believe Quickbeak means beasts that cannot fly."
Asthore says, "i know that but worms cant fly either"
Quickbeak flaps his wings to get attention and the question properly answered "Worms, wormbeasts, mouseworms!"
Asthore says, "alright..... the opengroung"
Furgo says, "But how is something a prisoner there?"
Asthore says, "oh yeah.. "
Asthore says, "oh yeah.. "
Asthore says, "a loft or the attic"
Furgo says, "But how are tasty treats there?"
Quickbeak ruffles his feathers "Mucha nuts inna nest, notta prisoner though"
Asthore looks at quickbeak " Do sparrows like candi................  alright... he answers quick."
Furgo sighs, "Should I just tell you the answer?"
Asthore says, "if you do i might give you a little kiss on the cheek....."
Furgo would blush if a mouse could, and says, "Very Well...The answer is the pond."
Asthore gives furgo a kiss on the cheek " Thank you
Furgo gives a really big smile, and were this a SitCom the audience would be doing that 'oooooooooooooohhhhh!!!!' thing they do when someone kisses.
Quickbeak just sort of watches them curiously, head tilting a bit.
RW Abbey: Pond
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a sizeable body of water, roughly shaped like an elongated oval. In it's current frozen-over state, it looks almost like an oversized silver platter, frosted with white swirls. The center of the pond is the more dangerous, as the ice is obviously thinner there, and does not reach all the way to the bottom. On the one side the pond is bordered by the orchards, where a wild tangle of bushes and ivy, mingled with dead water reeds and cattails have completely frozen, appearing as though they have been generously dipped in crystal. The other side of the pond consists of a thin sandy strip, followed by a gradually ascending snow covered slope and a cleared footpath that meanders back toward the entry area. A smooth, flat topped stone, also ice encrusted and just large enough for a grown beast to stretch out on, protrudes from the side of the bank and extends a foot or so into the frozen water.

The water sparkles in the high sun, and at times it is almost hard to look at.

Furgo walks over, and there, on the rock extending into the water, is a large bowl of salad with lots of candied nuts in it.
Asthore follows furgo and stares at the salad
Quickbeak follws along from the sky, circling round to land on the edge of the rock.
All of a sudden, it thunders overhead, and a drop of water hits a tree branch, but freezes on contact.
Furgo looks up, and grabs the salad as another drop lands on the rock and freezes. Then a fe wmore elsewhere. "We'd better get this inside."
Asthore says, "yes..whats the quickest way."
Furgo says, "The main entrance." More freezing rain begins to fall.
Quickbeak ruffles his feathers at the thunder, a small screech going at it as if that'll make it go away before he quickly takes off flying back towards the building.

Meanwhile with the other group...

RW Abbey: Great Hall

Tarpin sniffs airily and looks the other way. "humph!"
Cela shakes her head a little and goes to read out the riddle, get them started "Alrigh' : Wha' can ye see, 'tween earth an' sky? Et es above these, tha' birds swoop an' fly. An' below these, we walk en teh wood. They will make autumn, look twice as good. Bearin' fruit, en this abbey. Wha' is it?" trying not to make the accent come through too much.
Tarpin turns to stellaluna. "wot do you swoop an' fly above?
Stellaluna asks, "Is it wind again?.""
Rohen says, "Wha beers fwuit an' amkes Autumn wook twice as goo?"
Tarpin says, "strawberry trees have fruit."
Stellaluna asks, "A fruit tree?."
Rohen says, "Do yous fwy above fwuit twees?"
Stellaluna shurgs, 'Sure, why not."
Tarpin says, "et says ina abbey. H'orchard!"
Cela quietly thinks it over a couple of times before she looks back to the others, a light chuckle going to Tarpin "Iffen there were strawberry tree we wouldn't 'ave teh keep alla wee beasties off o' em, teh orchard though sounds right" heading for the door at that.
Rohen follows Cela, wheeling along.
Stellaluna follows, flying in quick graceful motions.

RW Abbey: First Orchard
--------------------------------------------------------------------
A soft blanket of snow covers ground, bush, and branch. The trees, leafless as they are, appear stark and black against this backdrop, their branches like so many spindly fingers reaching outward and up. The ground here is mostly level, with only the occasional small hillock. Despite the invaluable purpose of this place in warmer seasons, right now it merely appears a barren, lifeless patch of the Abbey grounds.

Tarpin asks, "where is it? I don't see anything."
Cela looks about and finds a scroll at the base of a tree "How can you live, without having me. I keep you alive, and you do so for me. While I wait in the earth, to be taken by you, Then I have the chance, to make life that's new. You protect me, while I make young ones, and all that you ask, is me when I'm done. 1. What Am I? 2. Where am I?"
Stellaluna looks at the scroll but says nothing.
Rohen thinks, and says, "Watter inna well?"
Tarpin asks, "'taters?"
Stellaluna asks, "Seeds?."
Cela scratches her stripes looking more puzzled this time, looking between the three of them "Well et can't be all o' em, can't say water really makes young ones, ah well, 'taters might, or seeds too"
Tarpin says, "Read da riddle again, marm."
Cela gives a nod to Tarpin and reads it again "How can you live, without having me. I keep you alive, and you do so for me. While I wait in the earth, to be taken by you, Then I have the chance, to make life that's new. You protect me, while I make young ones, and all that you ask, is me when I'm done. 1. What Am I? 2. Where am I?"
Rohen thinks, and says, "In da fall one of da gwownbeastses had ta pwatect da gardins from mes."
Tarpin asks, "what was ya trying to get?"
Rohen says, "Tasty Tomatoeses."
Cela chuckles a little and starts walking "Wull sounds like we may as well check teh gardens then"
Rohen says, "Yeah, maybe dats it!"
Tarpin says, "I's bored. Tell me when yas find da tweat." He runs off.

RW Abbey: Kitchen Gardens
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The earth gives its blessings generously to the abbey vegetable garden. The myriad of rows different shades of green line the ground, scarcely leaving room for a path, even dirt for that matter! The rows of food are placed well, each vegetable supporting the other. The tall vines of  tomato plants wind themselves around stakes in the ground. Pumpkins and squash add to the various colors of the garden. The plants for potatoes and turnips are seen, some missing that suggests a sly paw. The spicy leaves of horse radish seem to be well left alone.. Light green stalks  of carrots spread out like miniature ferns over their row.

Nothing grows under the blanket of snow currently covering the garden. Abandoned stakes and dead brown roots stick out here and there, testaments to the vegetation that once thrived in the garden, and will again bloom come spring. But for now, the garden sleeps peacefully.

Stellaluna nods, 'So this is it...somewhere."
Cela walks into the garden and looks around, well, a pie in the middle of a garden shouldn't be all that hard to spot, or smell for that matter, sniffing she heads in it's direction and goes to pick it up "Ah'd say we found et"
Rohen says, "Yaaay!"
Cela walks back to the others with the pie "Don't look bad too, should take et inside to eat"
Stellaluna asks, "Is it ours for the taking?."
All of a sudden, it thunders overhead, and a drop of water lands on Rohen's nose.
The drop of Water freezes on contact, then melts from body heat,
Cela looks up at the sky "Wull et were where the riddle said et'd be an' if et ain't we'd best take et inside anyway or someone's goin' to 'ave a very wet pie, come on, inside afore ye catch cold"
Rohen wheels over toward the path as more drops of freezing rain fall.
Stellaluna says, "Suits me."

And now back to Furgo's Group...

Furgo walks in from the main entryway, holding a salad, as the sound of freezing rain continues outside.
Cela leads the way in from the kitchens, looking a little soggy, not too bad and pie in her paws.
Rohen follows Cela in his wheeled chair.
Quickbeak flies in the main door and doesn't land again until he gets to the fire, coming to a slightly skidded landing in front of it.
Stellaluna seems to have manged to stay dry, probably stayed near the door.
Furgo says, "Now that we have all found the treats, we can now enjoy them, and we will share them as well."
Rohen gives a little cheer.
Asthore says, " furgo... i need to talk to you."
Furgo nods to Asthore.
Asthore says, "follow me.... well be right back"
Cela puts the pie on the table, a glance and raised eyebrow going to the mice before she looks back to the rest "Alrigh', who wan's pie, who wan's salad an' who wan's somea each?
Rohen says, "Some each!"
Cela starts cutting up the pie and quickly disappears into the kitchen shortly to return with some plates to dish both it and the salad out on "'elp yourselves" letting them serve themselves what they want, though she does hang around at the table with some of the pie for herself in case any help is needed.
Stellaluna grabs a plate and polity waits in line.
Asthore leads furgo back in.
Rohen gets himself about a handful of both pie and salad.
Furgo is allowing himself to be lead back in, and is looking awfully happy.
Rohen starts eating his pie and salad.
Asthore says, "is there anymore left"
Furgo waits before getting any food.
Doreen steps down the stairs carrying a small bundle in her arms looking around at everyone giving a nice smile. "hello thur." She maneuvers around and takes a seat near the fire letting everyone get there food
Quickbeak waits by the fire for a short while until his feathers are nice and warm and dry, listening to the rain outside before he heads over and lands on the table to inspect the salad.
Rohen says to Asthore, "Dere bes lots left."
Asthore gets some and sits down by furgo " Well... arent you hungry."
Furgo gets himself some pie and salad, smiling, and sits back down near Asthore.
Rohen is still eating.
Doreen stands after everyone is done eating she gently shifts the bundle in her arms the blanket draping over her arm as a head and ears are reviled for all to see, even though its still slightly small. She gets some pie and sits down back in the chair, plate on her lap.
Rohen wheels over to near Doreen, and out of curiosity, asks, "Wazzat?"
Doreen smiles at Rohen, gently turning the Buddle for him to see, "This is my little one, His name is Brian."
Asthore finishes up her plate.
Furgo is still eating, and still smiling.
Furgo finishes eating, and puts his plate to the side.
Stellaluna helps herself to pie and salad and then flies over to sit by the fire.
Doreen eats her pie carefully still holding the sleeping leveret finishing and then places the plate back on the table, returning to her seat once more.
Tayona saunters down the stairs pausing at the bottom to let out a loud yawn. Glancing around the room her nose gives a twitch at the smell of food.
Rohen says, "He wooks mow wike a Bwownie tah me."
The door from outside is booted open and Shalina comes in, soaking wet and shivering from the cold. From the look of her skirts, she's slipped and fallen at least once, and she appears to be in a terrible mood.
Furgo looks at Shalina, looks at the pie plate. It still has about two slices left.
Quickbeak is not far away from the salad on the table, pecking at one of the nuts he picked out of it.
