New Order member Log

Furgo (That's me) is asking brother Josiah of the Redwall Order to become a Novice. Looged by Josiah

RW Abbey: Late Rose Garden
------------------------------------------------------------
The Rose garden offers solitude and peace from every-day life of the abbey. A feeling of tranquility is presented through the roses and the open area that seems to flow over everything around.

Buds stud the plants along with greenery that shows through the last remnants of icicles that simplly /won't/ leave. The last vestige of the winter snow has long since melted from the trainquil little spot -- seeing as it's a popular place for young couples it's no wonder that the new carpet of grass under foot is now trampled flat. As it matures it will come back, but for now, it can remain flat. The little buds are already showing their colors, even a few of the early-bloomers beginning to come out and open up. A lovely place to represent spring, no?

** THIS ROOM IS BROADCASTING **

Furgo has arrived.

Josiah sits on a wooden bench here in the Late Rose Garden, a book on his lap as he looks zoned out. Though right now the brother appears to be nodding off a little due to lack of sleep.

Furgo suddenly notices the brother, and says in a squeaky voice, "Brother Josiah! You're just the mouse I was looking for! I have something to ask you."

Josiah jumps slightly at the sound of his name, almost dropping his book. "Oh!" His brown eyes look to Furgo. He doesn't recognize the mouse, and as he hears how he's been sought after, his eyebrows raise a little in surprise. "Looking for me?" He blinks, and then shrugs lightly. "..Very well. What is it?"

Furgo looks at him, saying, "I would like to become a Novice, and learn to be a Brother of Redwall, like you."

Josiah blinks again, still a little surprised. He's not used to others asking him about joining the Order, as the brother has not been a brother for very long. Not to mention Furgo's apparent enthusiasm over the matter. "Really.." he says as a small smile comes to his face. He sets his book down and stands up. "Well, I'm glad you're quite eager to." He offers a paw. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Josiah, as you already know."

Furgo shakes the paw eagerly, and says, "I'm Furgo." (OOC NOTE: Pronounced For-Go) He shakes the paw some more, and then lets it go.

Josiah nods. "Well met, Furgo." He gestures with a paw to the side of the bench opposite where he was sitting. "Have a seat."

Furgo sits down at the place Josiah gestured to. He looks at the Brother, with his eyes shining.

The white mouse's cheery temperament is contagious. Josiah's smile widens slightly. "So, I've not seen you around. Have you not been here very long, or do I need to get out more, or get glasses?"

Furgo suddenly frowns, but then his smile returns. He says, "My mum and dad recently left me here when they saw that the learning capabilities of our home in the woods weren't enough for me. I did reading, and thought I would like to try and enter the order."

Josiah looks intrigued. "In the woods, huh? Where abouts, if you don't mind me asking?"

Furgo thinks for a moment, then replies, "Well, I'm pretty sure that if I read my dad's maps right, we were roughly 2 miles north of the abbey. I think." He shifts in his seat.

Josiah oks as he nods. "You obviously heard of this place before you came here. So tell me.." His tone of voice sounds a little more serious now, but it's still gentle. "..What made you decide that you wanted to join the Abbey Order?"

Furgo smiles fervently, and says, "I wanted to join because when I was digging through the library when I first arrived, I read all about it, and saw it was something that would be perfect for me. It's not like other trades. I thought about it, and realised out of those I know, it's obviously the one for me." He beams.

Josiah nods again lightly. "I see. Then, you're probably aware somewhat of the various vocations that exist in the Order." He already has an idea to the answer of what he's about to say, but he asks anyway. "What do you aim to become in the Order?"

Furgo thinks a moment, then says, "I want to be a scholar in the order. Maybe even Recorder or Gate Keeper someday if I do well enough." He continues to smile eagerly.

Josiah continues to nod as he listens. Fishing for a particular answer, he then asks, "And why do you have those for your goals?"

Furgo thinks a little, then smiles again. He says, "I have them for my goals because I wish to help others achieve more, I enjoy reading and writing, and to keep everything up to date and as useful as possible." He continues to smile, and watches a caterpillar crawling on the bench.

Josiah nods once again, his smile growing. "Those are good goals, Furgo. Now you realize, those goals won't be easy to reach. As a novice in the Order, you'll be doing many tasks in addition to learning in classes. There are many chores to be done around here that all of us pitch in to get done, whether it's sweeping Great Hall, pulling weeds in the Gardens, Infirmary duty, or whatever. Not all of your time will be spent studying to be a scholar. The Abbey's Charter is about helping other beasts in need, in whatever way we can. As you advance further in the Order, you will be able to specialize more." He then adds, "I'm telling you this because I want you to be aware of what you're getting into."

Furgo nods fervently, and says, "I know what I'm getting into. And my mum hammered it into my had that even if I don't want to do a chore, I'm helping others and should just grin and bear it. Also I understand the need to learn the healing arts, because though I aim to be a scholar, I know that I will need knowledge of them If I am in a situation where I am the only one able to assist the medical needs of those in trouble."

The healer mouse explains, "Basic healing will be part of your studies as a Novice. Very well then Furgo, seeing as you are aware of what being in the Order will require of you, let's proceed." He grins lightly. "What I"m going to do now is recite to you the Abbey Charter. On this charter rests everything that Redwall Abbey stands for. I want you to repeat after me."

Furgo nods, and listens.

Josiah proceeds to recite the Abbey Charter. "To be Brothers and Sisters of peace and goodwill, living together in harmony under the protection of Redwall Abbey, forsaking all unnecessary forms of violence, not only to Mossflower, its trees, grasses, flowers, and insects, but to all living creatures. To help and comfort the dispossessed, harbor orphans and waifs, offer shelter to all creatures alike, give clothing, warmth and food to any beast or creature that is deemed in need of such. To educate and learn, particularly in the healing arts, comfort the sick, nurse the injured and help the wounded. "

Furgo repeats Josiah's words slowly, absorbing them, so to speak.

Josiah continues, "To take our food from the earth and replenish the land by caring for it, husbanding crops and living in harmony with the seasons always. To honor and protect our friends and brethren, only raising paw to do battle when our life at Redwall is threatened by treachery and the shadow of war; at these times every Redwall creature should show courage, fortitude and obedience to the Father Abbot. Albeit the taking of another life must always be justified and never carried out in a wanton manner."

Furgo takes in what the Brother says, and repeats it. When he is finished, he takes a deep breath.

Josiah smiles a bit. "How's that feel?"

Furgo smiles back, and replies thoughtfully, "It felt so natural to repeat it, It's almost scary."

Josiah nods. "Be sure to memorize that as part of your studies." He then stands back up, and gestures for Furgo to stand as well.

Furgo stands up, and says, "I will, Brother Josiah." He now looks a little more serious.

Josiah smiles almost from ear to ear. Once again, the brother offers a paw. "Congratulations. Welcome to the Order of Redwall Abbey, Novice Furgo."

Furgo shakes the paw, and gives a sigh of relief. He beams with joy, and says, "Oh, thank you ever so much!" He is by this time grinning from ear to ear in joy.

Josiah nods. "Not a problem. Now.." He touches his habit briefly. "Members of the Order wear habits like this one here. Your habit to wear would be a straight green color." He then grins. "So what say we go find you one?"

Furgo smiles, and says, "I say let's." He just beams some more. "I'm so happy, this is the perfect birthday present for me!"

Josiah looks surprised. "Birthday? It's your birthday today, Furgo?"

Furgo's beaming reduces back to a smile, and he says, "Yes. Every birthday I've had all my life I've only thought of one thing that could possibly make me the happiest mouse there is: For my birthday present one day to be the privilege of becoming a Novice of Redwall."

Josiah laughs a little. "No wonder you were so happy to see me." He then adds softly, "Not that being happy is a bad thing, of course." He motions to the main building. "Well, shall we go on and find you a habit?" he asks with a bigger smile.

Furgo nods, and says, "Yes please."

And so, with a smile on his face, Josiah picks up his book and walks happily to the main building, slowing a bit for Furgo to follow.

Furgo slowly follows after the brother into the main building.
