Torches on Poles-Take a look at them!
The bushes ruffle slightly. Then some tree branches. But what's doing it? Who knows. A few beasts pass by, looking and smiling as they enter the square. Cad's nose pokes out from the bushes for a moment and he looks around, sniffs and pokes back inside. Sneaky shrew.
Belliger becomes one of those beasts passing by, and he's unaccompanied by any others. He has a look of wonder on his face, craning his neck forward to try and get a better view of what the big deal is inside this town... He gives a look over his shoulder to his docked logboat, and heads forward again.
"Verminny!!" The shrew barrels out of the bushes right towards Belliger, unarmed of course and goes to tackle him but trips and falls on his face. "Your not verminny! Cadogan kill vermin!"
Belliger turns quickly and has his short sword half-unsheathed as he eyes the shrew lying face down on the path... "...You okay there, mate?" He walks over and offers the other shrew a paw.
"Its like lookin' in a mirror..." Cadogan goes to poke Belliger's nose. "But your not me. Hey, why you got sword here? I got no spear here. Put that away."
Belliger puts it away, as bidden, artfully twisting his head, dodging the nose poke. "Well, t'start off, we're both shrews." But, we'll get to that in a bit. "Why th'sneakiness, anyway?"
"Its what I do. No vermin can find Cadogan. When they do, no more vermin life." The shrew grins at this.
Belliger grins back. "Right, makes sense. Wot d'ye think's goin' on in tha' town there?" He points over at the town. "Seems like some kinda party."
"Gathering of some type, no vermin I can see so no need to fight. Nope." Cadogan looks out at the square, sniffs and looks back to Belliger. "Why you here?"
Yes! This would be -very- easy to pull off! Belliger grins again. "I'm on a mission, recruitin' for the Guerrilla Union Of Shrews In Mossflower... The Guosim. Heard of 'em?"
"Your the Log-a-log? The Log-a-log is ten feet tall an' can carry the biggest spear in Mossflower with one paw! Can take on a horde by himself and not be scratched! They say he can breathe fire from his arse and shoot thunderbolts from his eyes!" Cadogan grins. "Can you do that?"
Belliger chuckles. "No, I can't do that." He doesn't allow time for disappointment. "But I'm not the Log-a-Log. I'm just recruitin'!" A grin emerges again. "You seem like a gud enough shrew... Like t'join us?"
"So your not the Log-a-log but he sent you to find me to help is that it eh? Told yah I am a proud warrior." Cadogan grins. "But I'm the last of the Guosim, so how can you be of the Guosim?"
Belliger looks disbelievingly at Cadogan. "Where's your crew?"
"You not listen well. I'm the /last/ one so that means I got no crew. Ears are used to listen with." Cad chuckles. "Your slow."
Belliger chuckles. "No sir, I believe y'the one's slow. Y'see, b'cause you ain't got no crew. No crew..." Grin. "No Guosim. You got y'self a choice, matey. Y'join with us, or y'can kiss y'"Last of the Guosim" reputation bye-bye. B'cause -we're the Guosim.-"
"Who's we? You and me? Thats not much of a Guosim. Your no Log-a-log because he can rain down fire from the heavens, swim pike filled oceans! Charge monitors with his eyes close and poke their bellows open with the smallest dagger! He can get his arm chopped off and still win, grab the limb and beatcha to death with it!" Cadogan grins. "Got no crew cuz your..mean. Yah mean!"
Belliger's chuckles resume. "I don' know who tol' y'that... But I believe if y'indeed -were- the las' o th'Guosim, y'd be th'Log-a-Log by d'fault. An'..." He looks around him, waving his paws. "Don' see any fire rainin' from th'eavens. An' we got a crew..." That's only half of a lie. "An' I'd like ye t'join up with it."
"I can't be the log-a-log because I can't do all those things. Do I look ten feet tall? Nope. An' I don't got that Blackstone. See? What do you know?" Cadogan steps back. "You want -me- to join -your- Guosim? I dunno if it be a honor or a disgrace. Do I get to meet -the Log-a-log- and shake /his/ paw? I'll fight fer him!"
Belliger grins. "Well, we got th'Blackstone, too. Th'Log-a-Log wears it... An' so there's no confusion later... You'll refer to Log-a-Log Lassik, daughter of th'las' Guosim leader, as a she." Hearty laughter emits from the shrew's voice.
"Log-a-logs a...a female?" Cadogan's jaw drops. "Yer jokin' right?" He tilts his head. "Is she cute?"
Belliger lowers an eyebrow. "Tha's no way t'speak o' th'Log-a-Log." Enter cliche shrew hot-headedness. "If I 'ad 'alf a min'..."
"Yah'd do what? Huh?" Cad blinks. "Yer all talk and hot air yah know?" The shrew grins. "Iffn you were vermin, I'd killed yah by now. Yer lucky."
Belliger looks over to the celebration. He moves his paw away from his short sword, which he had instinctively begun to draw at the insult. "Follow me. I got a deal for ya... We duel. If I win, y'join up with us. If you win..." He gestures over to the logboat. "Y'can 'ave that, an' I'll join -your- Guosim. Deal?" He holds out his paw for an honoring shake.
"Deal." Cadogan shakes the paw.
Belliger begins to walk away from the town, to the outskirts.

Grabbing his spear, the shrew gets ready. Cadogan grips the makeshift weapon tightly.
Belliger draws his short sword, not even giving thought to the shiny scimitar. "Well, let's see 'ow much o' th' Guosim warrior's in ye..." He takes a stance.
"GUOSIM!!!" Cad roars out and charges Belliger! As he closes him he feints to the left and jumps towards him, trying to smack the blunt end into his chest.
Belliger moves his free paw up to grab the end of the spear, and he lifts it over his head as he drops to his knees and sweeps at the opposing shrew's feet with his leg and footpaw, aiming to trip him.
The sweep misses as Cadogan's spear is grabbed and he was in the air. Though with his weapon snatched, he drops off to the right and hits the ground. He tumbles to his footpaws and releases his spear. Cad pulls out his daggers. "Want some more?"
Belliger gets to his feet and grins. This time it's his turn to charge. "Logalogalogalogalog!" The shrew brings his short sword down to slash at the other shrew's chest... He doesn't want to kill, so he makes sure the slash would be shallow, should it connect.
One dagger comes up to knock the sword to the right and the other goes out to stab at Belliger's swordpaw, not trying to severe it but to just injure it. Cadogan growls.
Belliger takes a slight stab to his right paw as the dagger pierces it, and the shrew growls in pain and anger, still managing to keep hold on the sword... But he failed to feint to dodge the dagger because he noticed an opening. Quickly reaching to his other side and unsheathing his scimitar, he swings it quickly at his opponent's side, any other occasion being a killing strike, but he aims to stop the scimitar just as it rests against the other shrew's fur.
Close quarters, the shrew steps back as his dagger pierces Belliger's paw. Cadogan yanks it back and crosses his daggers as scimitar and duel-blades meet with a clang. "Oww?"
Belliger now has both weapons swinging, taking advantage of his own two weapons being larger than daggers. He unrelentlessly swings again and again at the other shrew, hoping to cause him to drop his weapons. Fighting is a lot harder when you can't kill your foe.
Oddly, Cadogan drops his daggers and steps forwards as the blades swing by him, missing his mark. He slams a fist at his stomach and throat. "Give up!"
Belliger struggles to keep his blades from swinging down to slash the shrew's arms, and is able to stop his short sword, but not his scimitar. The bigger sword comes slashing down at the shrew's fist aiming at his own stomach, and is able to dodge the punch to the neck, and in the same movement thrusts the short sword's point into Cadogan's face. Belliger instinctively tightens his stomach to keep the blow from doing much harm.
The scimitar comes down and Cadogan pulls his paw back, just as the side of it is hit with the sword, cutting it. He yelps in pain and stumbles backwards, staring at Belliger. "Ok ok you -win-."
Belliger sheaths both his swords. He's panting heavily. "You... you'll make a good addition to th'crew." He doubles over, panting still.
The shrew rips off a piece of his cloak and wraps it over his paw, grumbling a bit. He looks at Belliger. "Yeah yeah..when we go see the Log-a-log?"
Belliger stands upright and shrugs, bringing his left paw to apply pressure to his injured right. "Well, you could either come with me t'recruit more..." He looks at the logboat. "Or, you could 'ead to Redwall Abbey and talk to 'er y'self."
"I'll go with you. Someone needs to keep yah out out trouble. I'm Cadogan of the Guosim. Name means 'Battle Honor'.." He grins.
Belliger smiles. "Good. M'name's Belliger. Means 'warlike.'" The shrew stops applying pressure, and just lets his hand bleed for a while, although it's slowed. "Nice t'ave y'aboard."
"So when we get to fight again and rid the woods of vermin, take back our home and meet the Log-a-log again? I wanna see her shoot fire from her arse and thunderbolts from her eyes!" Cadogan seems excited as he grabs his daggers and spear.
Belliger laughs aloud. "Well, don' be disappointed if th'fire 'n thunder don' happen. That migh' be a bit of legen' instead of fact. Truth is, Lassik's jus' a normal shrew. But i's 'er birthright an' destiny t'reform th'Guosim."
"Never did answer me, is she cute?" Cadogan smirks and chuckles. "No offense or anything Belliger or nuttin'. I'll follow the Log-a-log till my last dies. I'll fight fer her."
Belliger decides to have a seat on the ground. "... Aye, guess she's 'bout as cute as a warrior shrew c'n get." The shrew chuckles. "Y'seem like a very loyal beast... S'good t'ave. Not a lot o'certainty in th'world these days."
"I can fight better then any foe, can hide and sneak better then any beast! An' I'd die before I'd let anyone hurt the Log-a-log, that I swear! When verm here our shout, they'll take their tails, stick them between their legs, put their noses to their rumps and kiss their arses goodbye!" Cadogan grunts and places his paws to his chest, after he puts the spear on the boat.
Belliger nods slowly, still grinning. "That'd be quite a feat of flexibility." He laughs aloud again, standing up and undoing his belt, tossing it on the boat as well.
"Anything can happen with the Log-a-log with us! Bless her soul, now we fight for a reason! These vermin can take our lives but they can't take our freedom! Long live the Guosim!" Cadogan grins. "We make this look good..."
"Aye..." Belliger's eyes squint a little, and his smile turns into a smirk. "Long live the Guosim." He turns a bit, and arches his back screaming to the winds: "Logalogalogalogalog!"
"Thats the way tah do it. LOGALOGALOGALOGALOG!!!!" The shrew warrior yells. Cadogan grins.
Belliger laughs out loud, becoming a bit more maniacal. "LOGALOGALOGALOGALOGALOGALOGALOG!"
"Now that was good..." Cadogain smirks. "How can I compete with -that-? Oh yeah I'm a better fight..." Minus the fact he /lost/ the duel.
Belliger smirks. "I betcha are. Secon' only t'me, that is. Jus' be glad we're on th'same team." He turns to Cadogan. "I am. Good fight, by the way. Don't use my scimitar much, but there was a lot on the line."
"Not second tah no one. I letcha win." Cadogan looks at Belliger. "I had yah right where I wanted you. I surrended to make it so you could save face." He grins. "..anyways, I would have followed you tah see the Log-a-log."
Belliger keeps up the smirk. "Well, if that's the case, then y'shoulda said so b'fore y'damn near came t'losin y'paw." The shrew chuckles. "It -is- excitin', that we're part o' th'great reformation of the Guosim... A long time comin'."
"Reformation? Yer nuts." The shrew smirks. "All the shrew are of the Guosim..they just don't know it yet."
Belliger grins. "Aye, y'got a poin' there... Guess we should call it a reunion... A reunion of th'mighty Guosim. But..." He steps to get into the boat. "We ain't mighty yet. That's why I'm recrutin'."
"I'm mighty. Who you calling not mighty?" Cadogan puffs his chest out as he gets onto the boat slowly. He looks at Belliger and stares.
Belliger doesn't have to search long for the "correct" answer. "Cowardly vermin."
"No you said we aren't mighty. I'm mighty. Speak for yourself not for all the other shrews. Thats the Log-a-logs job. I'll do what she says. And the day I meet a vermin thats not a coward when he hears our warcry, is the day I'll kiss the Log-a-log myself and lay down on the ground, spear in paw askin' fer death. Bloody vermin, only good they are for is target practice."
Belliger nods as he checks one more time for anything he could have forgotten, and shoves off, tossing Cadogan an oar while picking one up himself. "Right... Best thing I've done all day."
"Calling me un-mighty is the best thing???" Cadogan snorts as he grabs the oar and begins to paddle.
"Nothing." Belliger laughs as he paddles along with the other shrew... Destination unknown. Hopefully it'll take him and his new ally somewhere where they can find another willing shrew.
"So where are we going?" Cadogan asks.
"Wherever we see next." Belliger continues to row. "And hopefully, we'll be able to find some more unsuspecting Guosim there."
