Mother

Clare

Clare was Shalina's mother. She was a fisher on the west coast, north of the mouth of the river Moss. Allegedly the most beautiful jill on the west coast, she had a number of suitors, but she fell for "bad boy" Annas, who was a pirate. While beautiful, she unfortunately suffered from a frail constitution, which eventually, having borne seven children, led to hear death in pneumonia when Shalina was around three seasons old.

Father

Annas

Shalina's father was Annas abu Zeyad bin Saleh bin Khalif Al-Sayid, although his friends and family called him Abu Zeyad, or - in the case of family - just Abu. Before he settled down and became a fisher together with Clare, however, he was the pirate Annas Al-Sayid, captain of a fleet of three ships, and respected across the sea for his tactics, and for his strict code of honour. He was a pretty good fisherman too, but it didn't save him from drowning together with his eldest son, Zeyad, when their boat sank. At the time, Shalina was just two seasons, and doesn't remember much.

Elder siblings

Zeyad

Zeyad was Shalina's eldest brother, and the pride of his father. In every way an image of his father, Zeyad was an able fisherman. Zeyad strongly admired his father, and even died in the same accident.

Ame

If Zeyad was in image of his father, Shalina's elder sister Ame was an image of her mother. Unfortunately, along with her looks, Ame also inherited the same bad constitution that killed her mother. It became the death of Ame as well, who died of pneumonia when Shalina was six seasons.

Twin sister

Selima

Shalina was seldom seen without her twin sister Selima. The two sisters were identical to everyone but themselves (Shalina claimed Selima was shorter and had a more square jaw, Selima thought Shalina was fatter). The one distinction came about with Shalina getting a scar in a different location to the one Selima got later, Selima's scar being in a mentionable place.

The real distinction, and the one that made it impossible to get the two jills mixed up, was which elder sibling they took after the most. While Shalina was something of a tomboy (hence her scar) who took after her brother Zeyad, thus becoming a responsible, hard working jill (and a boring git according to Selima), Selima took after her sister, and became a bit more concerned about her looks (which didn't stop her from looking like a turnip according to Shalina).

When Shalina and Selima were six and a half, an event occurred that would alter Shalina's life (and presumably Selima's as well) dramatically. A pirate ship anchored nearby and the pirates came to visit, which was not an unusual event in itself, many pirates still remembered Annas, and wanted to make sure his family did well. However, the captain, possibly in jest, invited the two sisters to his cabin that evening. Shalina blankly refused, but Selima was flattered by the attention (and the handsome captain) and wanted to go. After a heated argument, Selima went alone, despite (or perhaps because of) her sister's wishes. It was the last that was seen of her, because in the morning the ship had gone, and Selima had not come back.

Younger siblings

Irad and Liam

Like with Shalina and Selima, Irad and Liam were twins. They were, however, not very similar looking. Irad looked more like his dad, whereas Liam looked more like his mother. Perhaps to compensate, their personalities were quite similar. They were always getting in trouble, and they never were far away from each other. When Shalina was five, they got into a last bit of trouble when they were laying nets. Irad got tangled up in the net and pulled in, Liam dove in to save him, and neither came up alive.

Said

Shalina's youngest brother, Said, was quite the copy of his dad as well, and he exhibited the same sort of personality that caused young Annas to steal a ship and turn to piracy. Always a handful, he disappeared from Shalina's life when he was recruited by a passing band of marauders - actually a pirate crew without a ship. The same pirates knocked down Shalina, stole all their belongings, and set fire to the cottage with her in it, an event that caused Shalina to decide to move someplace else.

Shamir

Shamir is Shalina's accidental premarital son with her husband, and looks like a male version of Shalina when she was his age, with the exception of course of the fur which isn't as bleeched, and the eyes that aren't as dark. Like any normal kit his age he likes to eat, sleep, crawl around, and bite things with his new teeth.
