History, in brief
Birth and parents
Shalina, her full name being Shalina umm Shamir bint Annas bin Saleh al Sayid (which means Shalina, mother for Shamir and daughter of Annas, who was the son of Saleh from Sayid) is a fisher from the northwest. The reason for her Arabic name is her father, Annas al Sayid, who was a pirate from the south, but who settled down and became a fisher after meeting Clare, the jill who would become Shalina's mother.
Upbringing and siblings
Shalina had four brothers and two sisters, but the life of a fisher is hard and dangerous, and they all fell prey to drowning and disease, with the exception of her twin sister and her youngest brother, who were taken by pirates. It was after the loss of her last family member in an attack by pirates, which also led to her house being burned down, and all her possessions stolen, that she left, eventually to come to Redwall Abbey.
Redwall Abbey and child
Finding a place as a scullery maid in Redwall Abbey, Shalina met a mate, got with child, and was married. Later, however, her husband disappeared, leaving Shalina rather disapointed with life in general, and alone to tend to her kit - something which she was completely unprepared for.
Personality, attitude, and style
The life of a fisher has made Shalina dress practical and think practical. She is a down to earth jill who doesn't take nonsense. Nonsense includes fighting, and those who fight. Like her twin sister, she sometimes has a short temper, and although she's mellowed down over time, she still doesn't hesitate to put her foot down when there's something she doesn't approve of.
Shalina is a maid, with a maid's perspective on things, and doesn't really get involved in larger scale decisions or events. She is one of the beasts who keep the Abbey running, and she's proud of that. Apart from her mate Vrain she has a couple of friends. One of them is Sunrose, who functions more or less as a replacement mother for her.
Her completely unwanted life as a young mother is bringing Shalina down, causing her to revert to a more childlike behaviour of short-temperedness and sometimes even tantrums - something which, along with the destructive behaviour of her kit, is wearing her welcome in the Abbey thin. At least with some.
