Log: A Bit of Library Trouble

Starlenia, Lark, and Dante come upon two dibbuns wrecking the library.

Redwall Abbey: Library

In this RP: Lark, Dante, Starlenia

There are two mice who don't seem to have anything better to do than run around and wreck things. The library being their choice for the afternoon. Books are scattered around the room, very few remaining on the shelves as the two work their way towards the door from deeper in. One of the armchairs is tipped over, and the throw pillow that was on it has a rip, downy feathers everywhere.

Starlenia slips into the library and, seeing the room in disarray, a quick gasp escapes her lips. She walks a bit farther in, spotting the two mice trashing the library, and waving to get their attention. "Cu-cut it ou-out!" cries the indignant squirrelmaid, though the other two probably won't listen. "Some-someone has t-to cl... clean this, you kn-knuh-know!"

The smaller of the two mice looks up immediately, grinning rather maliciously for a dibbun. "Well then you clean it, s-s-squirr-rel!" The larger mouse hears this from off toppling books down one of the shelves, and promptly returns to the main area, between Starlenia and the door. "Whatcha gonna do?" he sneers, sending three books from the shelf near the door to the floor, one of which hits the door with a thump.

Noticeable rattled, Star backpedals, stumbling over a pile of flotsam and scrambling back up. "I.. I-I'll get Sss-sister Muh-Mayl-l-lie! And the-then you.. then y-you're in f-fa-for it!" she blurts out, after some stammering.

After the thump, not surprisingly, the door opens. However, it's not one of the Order members, it's Lark. She looks around without any expression, then her eyes fall on Star. "What are you two doing?!" she cries, frowning immediately. The two mice look startled, one of them frozen with his grin of greeting still in place. "Do you want more cleaning duties? Clean up now!" The one not frozen darts around instantly, trying to pick up as many books as he can, stuffing them on shelves, which Lark seems to think is good enough. She kicks the larger of the two, who un-freezes. "Now."

Dante enters from the Great Hall directly behind Lark, a teacup balanced on top of some large book he's obviously been reading. He pushes the door open and stops, the door swining to the extent of its hinges. It slowly starts to close, hitting Dante's paw and causing him to drop his book, the teacup floating in the air for a second before smashing on the floor. The fox's left eye twitches for a moment. "WHAT..." He stops, and takes a few steps forward. "WHAT!" This is louder than before, close to a scream.

The more frantic of the two mice gets all the books on the shelves before the second has turned the chair right-side up. Lark nods to the first, who flees immediately, looking as if a thousand nightmares were chasing him. The remaining mouse tosses the ripped pillow onto the righted chair, then glares at Lark. "What, are you my mother?" he accuses, planting himself and crossing his arms. Lark's frown deepens, and she fingers her locket, which surprisingly makes the mouse blanch. "Don't make me force you," she hisses, and he promptly bolts out of the room. Lark shakes her head, but immediately she's friendly again, turning to Star. "Did they do anything to you?" she asks, glancing at Dante as well.

Dante isn't about to let the mice go without some sort of punishment. As the second one attempts to dart out the door, the fox grabs the door and slams it shut, reaching out his other paw and grasping the older, larger beast by the arm. One quick twirling motion later, he's got the mouse's arm behind his back and pulls it upwards savagely. After getting a satisfactory shout of pain, the fox leans into his ear and whispers "This is mine. Stay out." Releasing his victim, Dante waits to see if he'll receive a response, folding his paws into his robe. Lark is given no response, as of yet.

Still trembling from the minor ordeal, Star stands motionless by the door until the latter mouse has dashed from the room, at which time she wraps her arms tightly around Lark and makes a go at pretending the whole thing hasn't happened.

Lark is startled by the sudden reaction from Star, but has the presence of mind to hug the other squirrelmaid in return. "Sorry about them," she whispers. "I'll tell 'em off later. You ok?" Her eyes flick around to Dante as well.

Pleased that he scared off the mouse, Dante turns to the book on the ground and picks it up, setting it on a small table by the door. He then returns to the broken tea cup and begins to pick up the larger shards, tucking them away in his robe. He doesn't speak to anyone else in the room, choosing to act as if he's alone. That's what this room is for, of course.

Starlenia eventually lets go of Lark and steps away, shaking gently, and nods an affirmative. She glances at the door as if the two that frightened her so much would burst in at any moment, and then turns back to Lark, addressing her in a small but calmer voice, "Who-who were thuh-th-those b-beasts?"

Lark rubs her forehead to ward off the headache her friends caused. "Just dibbuns. Mik and Lew like to make a mess... it's their specialty. It's okay when they're outside, but indoors it's bad. We've already had a few issues with them," (We, like she owns the place) "So they know not to mess with me. I'm sorry they scared you."

Dante looks at Lark. Yes, it is important they don't mess with her. She's a confusing one, she is. He grins lopsidely at her as he finishes general cleaning of the floor. "Thank you." With those easy words he walks over to inspect the torn pillow.

Starlenia looks sadly at the chaotic mess filling the library, and then at Lark once more. "They ah-always taunt m-muh-me," she responds, the stammer receding as she calms down - and the ghost of a snuffle taking its place. That seems an especially sore wound.

Lark nods to Dante, addressing him politely for possibly the first time. "The books are out of order, they just put them on shelves. I'd fix it if I knew my letters better. If either of you read, would you move them back so the Sister doesn't get angry?" Then her attention is completely on Star. Her voice drops in volume, and while Dante may still be able to hear it, it's the thought that counts. "How much? Every day?" she doesn't sound pleased, but it doesn't show in her face. It's not Star she's displeased with.

Dante looks at Lark a bit condescendingly. /If/ he can read? Hah! He turns back to the pillow and plays with the edge of the tear. It's along a seam, thank goodness, and thus easy to repair. If only he knew how to handle a needle and a thread a bit better. This best get to an adult, as much as they'll be upset. Small price to pay for a bit of order, right? He picks up the pillow for a second before putting it back down and looking at the books. Ye gads, they certainly are out of order.

Feeling very small under Lark's questioning, Starlenia makes a hesitant nod. The two would rarely have kind words for her when they saw each other. "Ssssomet-times." Sometimes, hardly, but she didn't remember things very well beyond being on edge when they were around.

Lark seems to get the gist of Star's meaning. "They won't do it again. I promise. If they do, tell me, okay? I'll handle it." She looks around the library with a sigh. "Lucas would say I'm growing up," she mutters audibly. "Darnit." Then back to Starlenia, "Will you help him fix the books? I'll fix the pillow so nobeast needs to know this happened."

Dante is happy to hear Lark take responsibility for the pillow. Though she may be trouble a lot of the time, she can be a rather nice girl... He does look at the duo again when he realizes whom is being volunteered to work with him. Really, he'd rather not suffer the same humiliation as in the Great Hall. "I work alone." He mutters.

"I work alone," Dante has said, and Starlenia looks back to Lark for instruction. The same fox that startled her in Great Hall is in the library, she's realized, and a parade of emotions strolls across her face while she stays put, deciding whether or not to try against her shy attitude around strangers and make amends.

Lark smiles gently at Star. "Up to you," she says quietly, moving over to the chair and grabbing the pillow, into which she starts collecting as many stray feathers as she can find. There may be several under the chair, but she's not as thorough as an adult would be. Close, though.

Dante isn't going to risk talking to Star, but he does appear at least somewhat tempted to make amends. Just a little hint. Instead he begins pulling books off the bottom-most shelves, checking their spines and reverently running his paws across the front of a few.

Lark pulls together the pillow, then sets it carefully on the chair, moving about the room and picking up the few things still on the floor... a book, a pencil, drips of wax. The library will be cleaner than ever!

Dante decides against approaching either female squirrel. Those things could go off! Best play it safe. He walks further into the library, a bit of reorganization already completed. The room swallows his nearly noiseless footsteps in just a few short moments.

Starlenia slips the last book into its place on the shelf and takes a step back, looking around the room once destroyed and now set straight. It seemed, once they got started, as if the clean-up had been completed in no time at all. She nods to Lark and Dante with a faint smile, but opting not to say something to mark the occasion.
