A New Friend, A Kitchen Raid and a New Face (April 7, 2005)

Background: Lansing is a young Dibbun ferret that up until lately was fairly antisocial, out
of fear of being ostracized by other Dibbuns for being "vermin". His association with other
beasts has largely been with just his father Josiah, and a few select adults. Lansing's
interaction with other Dibbuns has been nearly non-existent until tonight, when he's
finally starting to overcome his shyness and fear. This meeting takes place in the later
evening.

RW Abbey: Middle Dormitory
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The middle dormitory is composed of a large hallway that is lined with brass lined doors
that lead to many obvious places. The infirmary being one of the most hectic places in
the abbey always has beasts rushing in and out of that area. The bunkroom for visitors
is almost as equally hectic. The northern and southern ward are set into dormitories for
the male and female abbey beast that have not yet earned their own dormitory on the lower
floor.

Not much can be said about the hall being more than a passing place, and thusly the small
squirrel dibbun Neel, with a bored look and scuffing his paws slowly meanders down the
hall, eyes looking down at the floor, ears perking, and other than him the hall is mostly
quiet.

Some oofs and whumps can be heard from the stairs. A dusty Lansing comes rolling off the
steps from the upper floor, and comes to a stop in the Middle Dormitory. He's on his
behind, looking rather disoriented.

Neel dart curiously over to the dusty other, but he slows down getting closer with a
chuckle, "Whatcha doin' up there for eh'?"

Lansing glances slowly at Neel, and suddenly gets this look on his face like he's going
to vomit out of dizziness.

Neel steps back quickly, not really being the most caring type, and if the other is going
to vomit he can't do anything about it.

Lansing doesn't actually vomit, but his tongue does hang out while he says, "..Blahh..."
He then shakes his head vigorously in an effort to regain his balance. He tries to stand,
but in doing so just flops back down on the floor, on his back. This would look pretty
funny to others.

Neel does chuckle a little before he finally goes to offer his paw and some help, still
chuckling, because he knows what the attic dust tasts like.

You say, "Things're spinnin'.." He does manage to make out Neel's offered paw and takes it,
getting to his footpaws slowly. He has essentially regained his balance this time. He
moans, "..Eehh.."

Neel grins a little, "Aye....Try fallin out o' a tree, tha' hurts too..." and he reaches
up to psuh the slightly taller beast's shoulder, just to see what will happen.

Lansing umphs with the push, teetering back and forth for a while before finally firmly
planting both paws on the floor. And then he gives a long, audible whoop while he slowly
keels over onto the floor. "..Uhnnnh..tha' wasn't very nice."

Neel shrugs, "Didn' hurt did i'?" almost expecting the other to try something back, not
that he wouldn't deserve it.

Lansing finally gets up and does keep his balance this time. He doesn't try anything back,
for more reasons than one. "Tha' fall 'urt a little," he says, referring to his entrance
in here. He then answers the first question. "Was a 'splorin'."

Neel nods, "Aye...Nothin' up in th' attics tha' ya can do scep go look ou' over th' side
o' th' abbey....Unless yew found somethin'..."

Lansing sticks his tongue out to the side slightly. "Jus' dust."

Neel sighs, "Yeah..." he reaches into one of the pocket pulling out some candied chestnuts
that none of the adults have managed to get back from him yet, offering a few to the
ferret, "Yew want some?"

Lansing oohs! He loves those. "Sure!"

Neel hands them over, chuckling a little, "Jus' don' tell sister Sunrose abou' 'em...."

Lansing stuffs them in his mouth, shaking his head while he savors the sweet taste in his
mouth.

Neel pops one of his own into his mouch, being less of a beast to fill his mouth to the
brink, "Don' choke yerself."

Lots of crunching noise can be heard as Lansing chews on the chestnuts. "Fory," he says
around them.

Neel shrugs, stepping out of the direct path that most of the crumbs coming from the
ferret will end up, "Don't worry about it..."

Lansing after a minute or so swallows the last of the chestnuts. "Those're so good," he
says with a grin.

Neel leans against the wall again, "Well, I prolly wouldn' walk around with 'em if they
didn'...." he smirks, "You 'ave any friends?"

Lansing hrms. "Dad's my frien'. Don't have very many others.." he says admittedly.

Neel ohs, and the fact that the hob still has a dad causes envy, "Only yer dad? Yew don'
ge' out much do ya?"

"..Was kinda afraid," comes the response from Lansing. "Thought everybeast'd 'ate me for
being a ferret."

Neel shrugs, shaking his head a little, "Nah, I only hat wild cats...Don' need ta worry..."

Lansing smiles slightly, seeming glad at Neel's response. "Wha's your name?"

Neel stands back up strait offering his paw, "Oh I'm Neel...An' yew are?"

Lansing offers his paw also. "'M Lansin'."

Neel shakes the paw, grinning, "Aye't, nice ta meatcha."

You say, "Good ta meetcha too. So.." He looks around, and finally notices the dust still
on him. He steps back from Neel while he brushes it off. "What're you up to?"

Neel looks around the room before he starts to head for the stairs, "I was bein' bored,
bu' now I'm 'ungry..."

Lansing says, "..'M kinda hungry too." Maybe he won't fall down the steps this time.
"..Maybe we c'n get some more of those candied chestnuts?"

Neel shrugs, "Only if th' adults aren't watchin'...."

Lansing responds, "We'll see."

Neel heads off towards the Staircase..

RW Abbey: Kitchen
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a long, narrow room with five large fireplaces set into one wall, and two equally
large wood burning iron stoves set against the opposite wall. Several small, rectangular
tables rest in here, but there are no chairs available. The rest of the wallspace is taken
up by an entire array of shelves, cupboards, and counters which hold the day-to-day cooking
supplies and utensils. The kitchen is clean and well maintained, and more recent efforts
have been made toward organization of the cooking ware.

On the wall just right of the door leading into Great Hall is a neatly penned chart, which
lists the names of beasts assigned to cooking duty as well as the dates and times they are
scheduled. A small note above the chart urges residents to volunteer for at least a slot or
two a week.

Outside, the last rays of sunlight are fading. The ovens are being allowed to cool.

Cooking Duty (Chart)

Neel arrives with: Lansing

Neel wanders into the kitchen quietly, but holds the door open for the younger, but larger
ferret, looking around the oddly quiet kitchen.

Lansing comes in, eagerly looking around for something to munch on. The young one is then
surprised to not find anybeast in here. "..Where is everybeast?"

Neel looks again around before he jumps onto the counter, only using his arms a little bit,
and moving towards the cooling rack, "Dunknow, bu' I guess i's 'elp yerself tanight...."

Lansing is excited at this opportunity. He clambers up onto the counters and searches the
cupboards for something to eat. He finds half a loaf of nutbread, made for dinner earlier.
Holding it in both paws, he almost immediately starts eating it, but he refrains. Instead,
after some thought he goes over to where Neel is (still on the counters) and offers it,
saying, "You want some too?"

Neel shakes his head, grabbing a still hot scone and bouncing it back and forth from paw
to paw while it cools a little, "Nah....Where's the jam"

Lansing looks around. "..Dun know.." He then proceeds to eat the half-loaf. It's not very
big; he could eat the whole thing without any problem.

Neel stops juggling the scone as it cools enough to hold, and starts searching the
cabinets, "Aye't...hey th' chestnuts er over there," he points with the scone as he goes
cabinet to cabinet, "Don't take too many or they'll notice."

Lansing is already half-way done with the nutbread. He glances over at the cabinet Neel
points at, but he doesn't give any verbal reply as his mouth is pretty full again.

Neel grins as he comes across the jam cabinet, plucking a jar of raspberry jam out, and
sitting on the counter to set to the work of getting it open, attention straying from the
ferret for now.

Lansing finishes the loaf, crumbs all over his shirt and on his lap. He does something
interesting for one his age. He gather the crumbs into a pile as best he can and holds
them in a paw while he looks around for someplace to throw them away.

Neel continues to work at the jar till he gets the cap off with a grunt, and then he looks
up, "Whatcha doin'?"

Lansing walks along on the counters (in a slight crouch to avoid hitting his head on the
cupboards). At the edge he finds a barrel of rubbish, drops the crumbs inside, and dusts
his paws off over it. "..Was throwin' the crumbs 'way. Dad says to clean up after yeself."

Neel nods slowly, opening one of the cuppboards and getting a small spreading knife from a
rack in there, and he starts to spread jam on his scone, "Aye, he one o' th' brothers er
somethin'?"

Lansing bobs his head, making sure not to hit it on the cupboard. "Ya, he wears those
'abits like tha rest of 'em do."

Neel stuffs part of the scone in his mouth to hold it while he closes the jar and puts it
away, biting off a large chuck befoer he jumps down off the counter, "Oh..." mouth still
full as he talks, "'E's no strict is 'e?"

Lansing shakes his head. "No," he says, responding to the question pretty quickly. "'E's
nice. We play a lot, an' have fun." There's a slight pause as he goes to the cupboard with
the candied chestnuts in it. "..Sometimes 'e 'elps me do my chores, when I 'ave them."

Neel tosses the spreading knife into the bin of dirty dishes, "Oh..." he sighs, quiet for
a moment before he continues to eat again.

Lansing does indeed find some candied chestnuts in that cupboard. He is tempted to take
many, but he remembers what Neel said. He gets a small handful and hops down, off the
counters. He brings them to Neel and offers a few, like Neel did earlier for him.

Neel shakes he head, finishing his scone, "I've ad enough fer taday..." he looks around
the room again.

Lansing nods a little, and pops one in his mouth, taking it slower with them this time.

Neel leans up against the near cabinet, thinking for a little while, "Hey Lansing...What's
i' like ta have a father?"

Lansing pops another candied chestnut in his mouth, as he ponders on this question.
"Ummm..." He pauses slightly, still thinking. "I think it's fun. My dad an' I have lotsa
fun sometimes. Sometimes I get in trouble when I do sumthin' I shouldn' and he scolds me
for it, but lotsof addalts do that." He then remarks in a rather profound manner, "..E's
allus tried to be nice to me, an' 'e loves me very much." His eyes had gone down while
saying all this. After another pause, he looks back up at Neel. "Why?"

Neel sighs, "I jus' don't remember mine very well..." ears drooping a little, as he tries
to decide to stay or just head up to bed, "I' 'as jus' wonderin'..."

Lansing ohs, his ears drooping slightly as well. "..What about your mama?"

Neel shrugs, clearly depressed at this point, "Where prolly 'ere my father is," and he
sighs.

Lansing gnaws on his lip. His features then brighten a little at an idea. "I could 'ave
you meet my dad, an' we could have some fun together?"

Neel smiles at the idea, "Aye't, 's long as 'e doesn' ave anythin' 'ganst squirrels."

Lansing giggles. "Nah." Munch, munch.

Slain arrives from the Great Hall..
Slain has arrived.

Neel nods, "Aye't, sound like i' migh' be fun..." he starts towards the door, less
depressed but not really cheery, "See ya tomorrow."

Neel has disconnected.

Lansing waves as he munches on the last candied chestnut he snatched from the cupboards
here in the kitchen. He's had his fill for food essentially, but now the young one's
thirsty. And so, he begins searching the kitchen for drink.

You room-page, "Yeah, that's fine. Though I have to go fairly soon myself."

Slain walks into the kitchen and glances about at the beasts in area.

Slain walks over to Lansing and kneels down to the little ferret "Hello little one."

Lansing heads further into the kitchen in search of something to drink, when his ears pick
up Slain's entry. He turns...and his eyes go wide, and he suddenly looks rather scared.
Scared enough, that he doesn't move even as Slain approaches. He's never seen Slain before,
not to mention monitor lizards. After Slain's greeting, the young ferret finally lets out a
loud squeak of fear and promptly runs and hides somewhere even further back in the kitchen.

Slain blinks a bit taken back but doesn't go after him, instead he sets down on the floor
"Hey now, don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you, I'm a friend." He says in a kind soft
tone.

Lansing doesn't respond verbally. His eyes peek out from behind a barrel at Slain, still
looking a bit fearful.

Slain gives him a kind smile "I swear, on my honor."

Lansing comes out from behind said barrel slowly and cautiously. He approaches Slain
slowly, still a bit afraid. "..You're not gonna eat me?"

Slain shakes his head "I'd never eat you, personally I hate the taste of meat, I like
fish."

Lansing continues to approach Slain, still slowly. Never having seen anything like Slain
before, he poses the question in the nicest way that he can, though it's still could not
come across well. "..What..are you?"

Slain says "I'm a monitor lizard."

Lansing tries to parrot the words. "..A monta lizzad?"

Slain nods smiling "That's right."

Lansing examines Slain, looking up and down. "...What's ya name?"

Slain bows to him "I am called Slain. What's your name?"

Lansing responds a bit slowly, fear having diminished to perplexion. "...'M Lans."

Slain smiles "It's nice to meet you Lans."

Lansing nods slightly. Then realizing what time it must be, he oh-ohs. "..If I don't get
ta bed, I'll be in trouble. Dad won' be 'appy." He quickly takes off out of the kitchen to
head for the dormitories.

Slain laughs waving good bye to him "Good night."
